Curator’s Comments:
Plumbago and Tortoiseshell came up on the site today, and I enjoyed looking through your other pieces that contain isolated specimens of transitory nature. While I had admired your amazingly complex compositions of twisted fisherman’s rope in the past, these still lives have a freshness that is equally pleasurable. The white background provides a crisp contrast to the rich color you’ve achieved with watercolor. This piece is particularly interesting in the contrast between the light washes present in the blue plumbago, and the more saturated shades of the butterfly. The diagonal crossing of the forms provides graphic interest to balance the subtlety of the marks. Autumn II & III are also striking studies of ordinary objects. The presentation of similar shapes between disparate living things calls attention to beauty within a natural order. I see now that these works were posted several years ago, although they seem most compelling in the season. I do hope you continue to post new work on the site.
