Curator’s Comments:
The irony of Ridgid (Rigid?) of course is in the surprising gelatinous quality of the golden rubber casting. The switch of hard versus soft materials calls to mind the exquisitely surreal Meret Oppenheim, as well as Oldenburg, and his soft vinyl sculptures. This piece is interesting in that the simple industrial form somehow skirts both historical genres, and is able to present as a contemporary conundrum. It came up randomly for me today, and looking through your other pieces I remember admiring your drawing several years ago. A thread between the works may be the irony of expectations in the creative process or a machinery of the mind so to speak. But I also see a concern for craft and tradition. Again, referencing Pop sensibilities, the everyday working object is both elevated and subverted by the clean lines and presentation. I’d love to hear about your concept, and if you’re continuing this body of work.
