bronze with patina, lemonwood with lighting
1/ 1
In this series, I combine a past with a present. I’ve worked with bronze for years and now have a few years of wood working under my belt; combining bronze castings with rich woods have a nice appeal. This is where I just begin to mingle my mediums; I like the contrast between the rich wood and cast bronze. I’ve always liked old objects; clocks, watches, furniture, etc. This series has an old yet modern feel. I decided for the first large piece I wanted it to have a totem/grandfather clock monolithic look. I created a wood column with stepped base and top but rather than clock parts, I placed a bronze sheet face on the front of the hollow column and cut holes in the bronze for viewing in which I placed cast bronze fossil images. A view to the past. Behind the fossil images I usually use some pop-y color of patina so when the inside is illuminated the piece has a very dramatic effect. I think I have created about 10 of these large pieces; this series also solidified for me that knowledge of materials means freedom when it comes to the creative process. I’m still having fun with this series and would love to introduce some different materials into it, maybe glass.
