Curator’s Comments:

Thank you for alerting me to your new piece! I have not in fact encountered one of your sculptures on the site that I didn’t like, but I’m mindful of what appears to be an ongoing aesthetic shift in your recent works towards more narrative associations between geometric and kinetically designed elements.  I’m curious to see how far you’ll take this representation. It also occurs to me that some of these movements towards storytelling come from the text you provide about the backstory of the creation of the artwork.  So The Blue Coach may in fact be viewed as a purely formal sculpture under different circumstances.  But responding to what I now know in the hierarchy of forms, I find the contextualization intriguing.  The blue coach is arguably the only object within the multipiece construction that takes on specific contours of what it represents, while the pushpin class is less obvious, and wholly homogenous. The precarious placement of the small class and coach suggest moving perils underfoot; geometric forms push off from the central pink beam and dangle in opposition.  The overall color in the sculpture is relatively muted compared to your other works, but stability still appears to be at the mercy of a precarious balance. As someone who’s spent a good amount of time in a classroom, I can appreciate the assertion that coaching requires the temporary suspension of the class/pupil from relentless distraction. Other readings of the works content could conclude the physical movement of objects stand in for ideas percolating.
