Curator’s Comments:

I enjoy all of the fantastical creatures in your series The Book of Hats.  This particular composite figure Chapter 43; the Employee doesn’t seem particularly mindful of his predicament. Floating in the space with his bird legs thrust forward, he is untethered and grounded. The subtle oil glazed red and brown hues produce volumetric chiaroscuro within the little rotund body.  The deep red hue of the background imbues the character with a sense of importance, if not for the unlikely rabbit hat tied around its head.  But he remains still and unfazed.  The humanistic facial features rather minimal, but the more I view the image, the more amused I become by the complexity created within the simplicity of expression. Without a mouth I can’t say I detect a scowl, but the mood is serious if not oblivious.  This is the genius of these characters.  I do hope you’ll continue to post more recent work on the site.
