Curator’s Comments:

The Carving Out of Angels is a cryptic image, alternately holding high resolution photographic elements, and enigmatic figural abstraction.  The light sources seem to be fractured from multiple sources, illuminating the eerie ‘empty’ human silhouettes.  I can’t be sure if I’m seeing large angel wings across the picture plane, or an interior cavern view of stalagmites.  There’s also a presentiment of cave paintings, and stenciled shadowing on rock walls, as some of the figures are more pictographic in nature.  The muted color scheme stresses this contrast between fully developed chiaroscuro versus closed, flat value patterns.  But whatever the origin of the found or constructed textural volumes, they offer a view into the supernatural or preternatural on earth.
