Curator’s Comments:
The Fall of Hymen’s Rule is a viscerally challenging piece. While scale isn’t noted on the site, the sculpture looks to have a dominant presence with its saturated red hues and a central aperture. The notation on the first of the three images, explaining your fascination with virginity and cultural practices, suggests the series is either the development of a performance or rather a triptych with three separate fiber pieces. Either way, the breaking down or tearing of the fibers suggests a sensory violence, charged with embedded associations of sex and carnage. The choice to present the work on a black ground also shrouds the piece in mystery, if not clandestine secrecy. I find it interesting to compare this work to your figural mask pieces. They each fragment the body, and call to mind evolution or corporeal transformation.
