Curator’s Comments:
The Last Emperor came up randomly on the site for me today, and I have been spending time wondering about the unusual and slightly cryptic iconography. The black linear structures and radiating lines suggest radio waves and a dish or related technology, while the piece carries an allover rustic, and visceral brown surface texture. The title suggests the end of an era if not civilization, adding more mystery to the piece. The works adjacent to this painting have similarly galactic titles, offering the viewer entry into a mystical and turbulent space. The animalistic creatures in some are also reminiscent of Dubuffet’s wonderfully tactile beasts. As soon as they are recognized, they dissolve into pools of unexpectedly intense color. As the last work was posted several years ago, I do hope you revisit the site and share new paintings. Perhaps the last emperor was not the last?
