Curator’s Comments:
The Minotaur is an arresting image, with hot orange hues bubbling under the abraded surface. The side wards glaring eye of the great beast adds tension to the cropped image; he stares out at the viewer with intensity. I’m curious about the special effects noted in your description of the image. I presume the mixed media is somehow responsible for the crackled surface. The darker shadows over the cracks add mystery and the suggestion of the patina of time. The subject and treatment consequently recall prehistoric cave paintings, while the title clues the viewer into mythological inspiration. However, he piece does appear to be an outlier in your portfolio on the site. Looking back over your work, I remember admiring some of your straight photography and figurative pieces. I’m wondering if you’ve engaged in more experimentation with the process of the effect. The result is quite engaging.
