Curator’s Comments:
Orobourus unfurled (hydra) attracted my attention because of its dynamic shape and fluid color sensibility. I have previously admired your other mixed media abstractions, but this piece, and the other works that ‘float’ on a white ground are particularly adept at challenging figure-ground expectations. I appreciate the smaller shapes within the form, as they slow down the visual movement across the larger diagonal, and create secondary trajectory spaces. I also contemplate and admire the broad range of color palette. While there’s not necessarily a dominant warm or cool hue unifying the image, the relatively neutral browns and open white sections beautifully offset the more saturated colors. Reflecting on the title, I can see associations between serpents and other elongated biological forms. But the airiness of the work also lends itself to flight. Thank you for sharing these. I hope you continue to post new work on the site.
