Curator’s Comments:
It’s hard to pass over an image labeled Best Image! And while the title is likely just an inside designation, as the adjacent copy is titled They Sing a Song Only You Can Hear, I’m glad I took a longer look. I remembered admiring your landscape (and title) We are nourished by that which consumes us, which has a more open use of space. I enjoy the visual density and stratified layering of colors and textures in this piece, and the contrast of the larger foliage shapes in the foreground. They nicely frame the entrance to the view, as the viewers’ position seems to hover just slightly over the central clearing. The sloping diagonals also nicely crisscross the picture plane, keeping the long horizons from maintaining static lines. The contrast in the background stops the painting from creating deeper atmospheric perspective, but the patterning of the distant peaks is visually engaging. It is a beautiful piece. While it may have originally been a reaction to a particular time and place, the landscape is transformed into one that appears more of artistic creation than direct representation.
