Curator’s Comments:
Still Life with Metronome and Skull is an interesting painting in that the ceramic frog adds an animated presence to the classically arranged still life. The gesture of the frog and its look of wonderment/awe at the human skull set up immediate visual dialogue with the metronome and flower figurine (maybe it’s a cast iron doorstop?). Functioning as backdrop while visually existing within the same plane, these objects fall into roles of secondary areas of emphasis behind the two “figurative” objects, while assisting in referencing time itself in the pictorial narrative. It’s a visually lively piece despite the static physical nature of the subjects.
