Curator’s Comments:
I enjoy the gestural interactions between the Four Bathers, and how their abstraction increases with implied distance along the horizontal picture plane. The figure on the far and immediate right leads the viewer into the environment, and directs our gaze along with hers, to the central figure with the flowing purple hair. The extreme stylization of the two other two nudes occupying the same communal space is reminiscent of Picasso’s bathers and women of Avignon. The interior of the room continues the sinuous distortion of their bodies; the woman on the extreme left practically merges into a twisting red panel or drapery. The dominant orange and violet color palette adds a mood of raw emotion, while furthering their connection compositionally. I also like that the temperature of the warm hues creates intense, dramatic energy, echoing their movements. It is a vivid scene, rather than offering the languid sensual mood we sometimes experience with classical bathers.
