Curator’s Comments:
Calypso Joy is an intriguing painting that makes great use of the transparency of the watercolor media with more opaque passages of acrylic. The triptych format creates both breaks of visual rest from all of the activity, and a hierarchal emphasis on the central section. The inward slant of the foliage like shapes contribute to this framing of the main section. I’m less certain about the white texture that crosses through the three sections- is it masked out (paper), or opaque applied white pigment? The texture suggests a tiny honeycomb configuration. I especially appreciate the amorphous light area that travels through the top of the piece, opening up the otherwise densely constructed space. The painting has an evocative title, causing me to search for the presence of the nymph within the flora and fauna.
