Curator’s Comment:
This is an exquisite piece in a consistently sophisticated suite of works. The nuances of line and space between the wood grain and darker shapes play with the viewers’ perceptions of solidity and opacity; order and chaos. I like that some pieces seem more arbitrary than others, as if you’re literally drawing the image out of the grain. Origami’s angular shapes and value pattern suggests an air craft of sorts, with a collision in the central focal point of higher chroma blue. Fractured shards seem to break away from the essential structure, but are temporarily suspended in the stratified air of the pale birch wood. The delineated outlined shapes (edges of the Plexiglas?) read as clouds in this context, further supporting the abstracted narrative. I’m not quite sure how the materials are manipulated and attached, but I consider that a positive consequence of the technique being subservient to the overall effect. Above the Hudson shares a similar dynamic in its relationship to form and ground. The pale blues, ochre and brown marry beautifully with the natural hues in the wood. Again, I see controlled disarray in the careful demarcation of edges as ‘planes’.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
