All of the images in this painting were found in the streets of Florence Italy. I lived and painted in Florence for 5 months on a Fulbright Fellowship. Each painting I did while there was inspired by the popular culture of Italy.

Curator’s Comment:
What a magnificently absurd piece, pushing the boundaries of kitschy sexuality surrounded by Americana and popular culture. I perceive the relieved symmetry of the nude Marilyn figures to be homage to camp- flanking what would be an obtrusive penis, if not for the faint value pattern. The softer modeling pushes the drawing of the genitals into the background, giving predilection to the contrasting Pinocchio on the far right. His surprised animated expression bumps up against Marilyn’s breasts, and also serves as a visual and conceptual counterbalance to the classically rendered angelic figure on the bottom left. I’m intrigued by the overall softness of the piece, as the subject is a clash of graphic pretense and advertisement. ‘Black Jack’ in script at the bottom alludes to a certain nostalgia surrounding casino games, and maybe even black jack gum. It’s subversive in a cunning way, reinforcing the feminine/masculine power of Marilyn and the centralized phallus.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
