Subject: Re: Curator's Comments Aug. 2018
This piece came up randomly today on the site, and I remembered appreciating the provocative title of the portrait series some time ago, but not specifically this image. Designated #8 within the group Truths and Things I Made up about This Woman, the photographic collage appears more straightforward than many of the others. While the text and graphics cross the face (literally) the symmetrical compositional blocking keeps the head stable and centered. I find that I like this more subtle approach to the text overlays, as it makes the viewer search her eyes and then cropped and mirrored surroundings to make conceptual connections between the disparate elements. I also find the choice of font interesting, as the sarifed characters visually meet the wispy black lines of the subject’s eyebrows and eyelashes. The gothic style of the letters stylistically contrasts the natural inclusions of foliage, but underscores the religious constructions of the words. It is a very interesting piece, creating a sense of intimacy with, and moral judgment of the subject.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
