Curator’s Comments:
The mixed media piece on paper simply entitled Eyes presents the viewer with compelling abstraction. The large yellow (cat?) eyes fix our gaze, while gestural elements whirl around them on the open picture place. The scrawling black lines in particular present an interesting visual foil to the controlled central focus of the figure, and to some degree suggest an obstruction in space. Sweeping blue lines elude to wind or feathers. Bright red ink splatter and dots evoke a conflict, or literal bloodshed. For me, the dots also add a transformative element to the cat eyes, which I later interpret as a spotted owl. This shape-shifting of animal form taps into primal encounters, and our natural sense of fear and wonder. Looking back through your other works on the site, I was reminded o your text-based work as well as academic figure drawing. Please do consider adding new work to the site. I recognize Eyes was posted many years ago, and I am curious to see what you’re doing now.
