Curator’s Comments:
The type-based monochromatic piece Timebomb caught my attention today. The irregular blocky capital font works as an enveloping textural pattern. Some words have more emphasis than others; either because of placement, or contrast with the heavier linear edges. Reading the passage takes place only after taking in the image in its entirety. I appreciate the compositional choice to leave some negative space in the bottom of the piece. The openness gives the viewer entry into the picture, as well as provides more attention to the bottom line. I find it interesting, and enjoyable, to contrast your text-based work, including Free?, with the more organic figural works you have posted to the site. Not only does the range show a level of artistic dexterity, but it’s as if these works provide a periodic visual break from the more traditional drawings. While Timebomb certainly seems of this moment, I see it was created several years ago. I do hope you continue to share new work on the site.
