Curator’s Comments:
This hypnotic image posted back in 2009 appeared randomly on the site today, and I was drawn into the rich shadows and surprising manipulation of pattern and scale. I don’t know that I would have recognized the ivy as subject in Twirled without the footnote, as the origin of the foliage is obscured by the thick carpet of the small leaves. I appreciate the fact that some sections remain in focus while other areas capture the spun movement. Without a singular focal element, the circular formation nonetheless provides further harmony to the concentrated repetition of the ivy. Looking back through your other pieces on the site, I remember admiring and commenting on Comorant. But while the stark contrast afforded the pilings and water a dramatic equilibrium, it occurred to me that Twirled also brings the viewer into a space with familiar natural elements, only to have the horizon, and the viewers’ footing in the environment, vanish. These are wonderful works, and I’d like to see more of them. Please consider sharing your new pieces to the site.
