Curator’s Comment:
Thank you for inviting me to look at your photographs- I do in fact like them very much. The piece entitled Red Hunting Trophy holds my attention the longest, partially because of the ambiguity of the central form. Figurative in nature, the bleached skull suggests a prone figure with outstretched arms, in a cruciform gesture. The tormented sensation of crucifixion is amplified by the alizarin crimson and violet background, and the tiny gashes of needle like cuts. But it alternately reads as a more straight forward animal head and horns when separated and pulled from the hazy surrounds. The first image, Pomegranate, also contains an enjoyable manipulation and dissolution of form, as the actively textured hatched ground and color break down the recognizable value pattern. The radiating orange and hot pink hues from the off-center crown of the fruit create a glowing aura, keeping an area of emphasis on the subject. The ground threatens to overwhelm at times, breaking through the midpoint of the pomegranate and compromising its structural integrity. The consequence of this tension in many of your works is a dynamic push and pull between representation and abstraction, imbuing the ordinary subjects with extraordinary properties which begin to negate, or at least question their very existence.
