Curator’s Comment:
I see El Camino de Chun as an intrepid, Modernist inspired piece that alternately contains uncharacteristic visual elements. I like the achromatic, cubistic structuring of what I read to be the background forms, with the thin match stick columns of red, blue and gold. The constantly shifting perspective keeps the picture plane slightly agitated, and energized, while the solid black rectangles provide small amounts of visual rest. The black shapes also appear to recede into the ground, and create architectural fissures or pronounced interstices in the lighter palette. But while hard edged forms dominate the piece, closer inspection reveals an organic modeling, or more subtle chiaroscuro of shadow and light. I find it curious that the other works you’ve posted on the site are primarily frontal, direct, and representational portraits with only Good Ancestor containing pronounced flat patterning. While these seem to be polarized ways of working with the spatial picture plane, I do see some small hints of the linear design within the face of Ancestor- as if the subject has in fact grown from the design, or vice versa.
