Curator’s Comment:
Despite the cooler aqua palette, She Treasured All of These Things has poignant emotional warmth. The sensitive drawing of the facial features of the subjects asserts steadfast strength and gentility; the radiating pattern in the background also suggesting an aura or halo. The patterned cloth alludes to a quilt/folk reference, of family, and to the domestic realm. I really love the scattered inclusion of these fabric fragments as they fall down into the figure’s elongated form, and move into transparent shapes. The shift of opacity and translucency could signify the passage of time or material. I see a similar approach to the figure and textiles in your other pieces. The open drawn contour of the human subjects leaves the viewer with a feeling that their environment consumes and fills them; and in fact makes them complete.
