Curator’s Comments: I might have recognized your distinctive mark making in this piece notwithstanding the specificity of subject if I’d viewed the piece within a closer time frame. Having admired your more economic non-objective drawings some time ago, I’ve revisiting Scissortail, and have a new appreciation for the visual restraint and selectivity of forms. While in the context of the simple cross and circular shapes it obviously offers more definition and detail, it stops shy of full representation. I find myself enjoying the weight of the almost negative space. The needle like scratched lines in the background imply movement, but also feathery physical trembling and the thistle texture of the brush. The minimal color offers a beautiful subtly- the pinkish blossoms infuse the grey flycatcher with faint warmth.
