Curator’s Comments:
The Clinic takes on new potency in the context of an ongoing global pandemic. Created last winter, the painting captures an emptiness and trepidation that had endured. The figure’s choice of identical doors supports the fragile illusion of choice in a bleak environment, without actually naming the peril. I appreciate the choice to clothe the clinic patient in the same dusty yellow as the hospital walls, for he is of the space as much as in it. The slightly more intense yellow light on the ceiling curiously doesn’t illuminate anything in the space. Perhaps this is another metaphor. I keep going back to the black square space in the distance, both technically and emotionally. While the ominous darkness supports my overall feeling that the piece is less than optimistic, I nonetheless appreciate the spatial escape through this area of visual emphasis. I have enjoyed all of your work on the site, and your prolific studio practice. There’s a realization the work is simultaneously timeless and of the moment. So the only question is which door to choose.
