Curator's Comments:
Thank you for sharing these new oil paintings to the site! I immediately recognized the abstract figuration of your signature style. The human bodies and landscape in which they exist appear to be sculpted out of the same blocky material, creating a vaguely fantastical space reminiscent of Philip Guston. Please forgive my repetition of the comparison, as I’ve likely made it when commenting on your works in the past. While uniquely your own vision, these paintings also share a similarly quirky cynicism with the late New York School painter. This untitled piece appears to depict a modern irony wrapped within a Biblical or mystical parable, as the male figure turns away from the female, and the larger angelic being. While not distinctly Edenesque, the landscape is idyllic, bordering on the pastoral. I’m intrigued by the inclusion of the stepping stones, and sliver of a cart wedged into the extreme bottom right of the composition, which looks as though it’s being pushed off the picture plane by the oblivious (or unfazed) man. The purposeful inclusion of a rocky path, divided at the intersection of the magical event may be prophetic. But whatever the intent of the narrative, I’m attracted to the robust brushwork, which animates the chunky fortitude in your works.
