Curator’s Comments:
At first viewing this untitled painting shares little with your other figurative bodies of work. It is appears to be derived from still life rather than the human form, and is decidedly more abstract and analogous in its intense pink palette. However, I do see an interest in stylized form that moves it into an economic and perhaps idealized depiction of form- much in the way Phillip Guston would characterize his subjects. The sharp shifts in planar edges and angles can also be seen in your still life with oranges, and surprisingly constructed work Across the Street. While the intent behind this piece may be very different, I do enjoy the breaks between flatter space and pattern. It feels fresh, and the movement between lines and shapes offers a quicker visual pace and rhythm. I do find it curious to consider that these works could also be placed in reverse chronology. While posted later in the timeline of the more elaborate figural narratives, it looks as though you’re experimenting with classic/academic problems such as still life and drapery. But regardless of the time of their creation, I admire the broad creative stretch between methods of working that vacillate between the formal, illustrative, and conceptual.
