Curator’s Comments:
These metal figurative sculptures are captivating to me both in terms of scale, and interface with multiple artistic genres ranging from Art Deco/Fritz Lang’s dystopian Metropolis, to robotics and cybernetic animal/human hybrids. The works transcend familiar models of transformer representation to explore new mechanistic structures and aerodynamic/anthropomorphic forms. For this reason I prefer the two legged versions. The warm toned photograph of this particular piece is striking, as the folded over/ kneeling pose of the figure embodies a feeling of restrained strength and control. Several of the subdivided shapes that move off of the central body give a sensation of lightweight, transient wings capable of delicate movement, just as the strength is also implied in the metal structure. I also like that the heavier weight of the torso section and upper leg area have a counterpoint of a thin spatula like foot on which the sculpture rests. It reminds me of a runner poised on the ball of her foot, about to spring and release into a powerful burst of energy. These sculptures beautifully capture contemporary aesthetics while looking back and giving a nod to Modernist styles of the past.
