Curator’s Comments:
This lovely untitled print came up randomly today, and I stopped to admire its understated elegance. The piece initially appears to have a simple constriction and subject, but the energy of the tapered drypoint lines radiating off the ball cause the form to crackle in its space. The distribution of highlight and shadow suggests directional chairoscuro lighting, but the cast shadow moves slightly out of the path of the sphere, casing a suspension of its visual weight. I appreciate the proportionally large amount of negative space around the subject, uneven top and bottom so that again, the viewer feels the weight of the form. While I usually like a clean wiping of beveled plate edges, the faint traces of ink around the edges here actually help to contain the image, and articulate its boundaries. The unevenness of these vestiges helps support the organic quality of the drypoint.
