Curator's Comments:
Randomly coming across this Untitled (II) picture today, I’m captivated by the freshness of the marks and color. The innovative and unexpected division of the picture plane by pink, green and pale blue banding gives the painting a surreal, and slightly disjointed feel; as if between dreaming and wakefulness. The patterning within the primary shapes grounds the imagery and space, while providing fluid connectors. I remembered admiring your figural abstraction when I was introduced to your work by a mutual friend several years ago. While some works have a raw, fleshy nature, I find this piece more whimsical, with layered associations. What look to be bunny slippers on legs thrusting into the center of the composition are offset by figures pulling back on opposing sides. Heads omitted from view, the expression resides in bodily forms and tugging tensions between them. I can keep coming back to this pleasurable work, for it exudes joy as well as mystery. I would love to see where your painting practice has taken you, and do hope you’ll considering sharing your new work.
