Welcome to the site! Your portraits containing Western pop imagery with various other iconic references create intriguing and slightly subversive juxtapositions. I especially enjoy the first image- untitled- Marilyn. It takes me a moment to distill the connection between the Warhol-esque Campbell’s can and the offset face of Marilyn. While the other portraits align the body with an alternate head, the Marilyn piece plays with our spatial expectations. Adding to this optical mix, the shadows on the lower portion of the figure are quite realistic, while the graphics of the upside down soup can are more obviously had painted rather than photographic. I also like the aesthetic decision to grey down the contrast in the picture of the subject on the wall. As it recedes in shadow, the viewer reads her as another observer to the ironic pairing. I’m wondering if you chose to invert the can so that some of its emphasis is downplayed, pulling more visual weight to the smoothly painted body. The paintings are very strong as a connected series. I do look forward to more of your work on the site.
