Curator’s Comments:

This sensual abstraction came back up randomly on the site, and I became enamored with the organic fluctuations in texture and color.  The dividing blue section in the top portion of Utopia suggests the relationship between striations of land or water; this is enhanced by the bubble pattern within the amorphous blue-pink ground. The blackish vertical line protruding from the bottom edge is a nice visual surprise, connecting and leading the viewer back ‘above ground’. The implied line between this dark line and the inky mass on top cleaves the open expanse of scumbled color.  I’m curious about the mixed media used in their piece, because of the saturation of the blue pigment, and the ambiguously layered color which looks to enjoy a matte semi-translucency. As with many of your other square formatted works I’ve enjoyed in the past, Utopia has a dynamic equilibrium present in the denial of landscape or portrait spatial orientation. There is a refined purity in the painterly expression.
