Curator’s Comments:

Venice Canal has an interesting architectural composition, as the vertical stacking of the windows within the elongated picture plane create a relieved symmetry.  While it has the same (almost obsessive) attention to detail as the other sweet street scenes in your portfolio, there is an especially robust use of line and shadow.  While attention has been given to individual cracks in the Venetian plaster walls, it is the complementary blue-orange color scheme that I notice first.  The blue and white pole twisting up from the intensely blue water points upward to the arched window.  I like that the openings aren’t exactly repeated. Whether or not an intentional choice, or simply true to the photographic reference/subject, the horizontal bar that cuts the piece in half appears to shear off the top of what could have been otherwise another arched window below.  I also like that the viewer isn’t given entry into the spaces; the building front remains a flat and decorative façade.
