Curator’s Comments:
After Hours is an intriguing painting that I grow to like even more with longer viewing. The piece formally connects two very different kinds of space in a surprisingly fluid manner. I find the fragmentation of the figure and her dissolution into pure pattern creates a pleasurable gestalt. The higher contrast and opacity of the paint within the body keep the central subject as a strong focal point, while the amorphous color around her swims with analogous hues. Some of your other pieces have a related figure-ground relationship, such as in Jennifer Pizza, or The Geisha. But After Hours enjoys a more dynamic interchange between the elements with the outstretched gesture and movement of color in and out of the open breaks in the dancing figure. These are highly original works, and I hope to see more on the site.
