Curator’s Comment:
I thoroughly respond to your stylistic, painterly handling of form coupled with bold color blocking. The keen geometric divisions of the picture plane are quite arresting, while the nuanced areas of scumbled color and light can be appreciated within the smaller sections of the irregular grid as pictorial vignettes. Virum is especially pleasing with its quasi-interrupted horizontal bands. It’s suggestive of Sean Scully within architecture. I find the creamy hues in the right half play well against the slabs of the gray structure, infusing what could be a minimalist study with a visceral interplay of saturated color against glass and concrete. I also enjoy the almost ironic inclusion of the natural world in the impastoed line at the base of the painting, and small silhouetted reflections in the windows. Despite downplaying the landscape, there is a surprisingly organic feel to the piece, overall. I see a similarly characteristic approach to the organization in many of your other works. Studio Outlook 3 is simply stunning. I love the lush orange reflection against the muted green at the graphic intersection of the linear black frame. The dark shape becomes almost cruciform- reading simultaneously as structural interior containment or obscure shadow. Both pieces provide subtle, quieter spaces of visual rest to balance the agitated, but elegant brushwork. Seeing your work makes me what to get back in the studio and paint.
