Curator’s Comments:
The looping lines in this piece (West Side Salt) provide a welcome release and relief form the more aggressive abraded marks, layering the non-objective space. I enjoy this balance between sensibilities in your painting; from the rather raw chalky white fields to the mellow tinted warm tones. There seems to be a fair amount of sgriffito, intuitively leading the viewer into layers of pigment. I generally prefer the pieces which leave a fair amount of open space, since the gestural brushstrokes provide a good amount of visual activity, but here the calligraphic black lines are also a crisp contrast to the pinkish textural ground. The title hints as an abstracted salt shaker, emptying down into the work. But without this reference it appears as a vestige of a vessel or tube.
