Curator’s Comments:
Opacity and color transparency dance back and forth in this enigmatically titled works. What, 8, offers the viewer a designation and visual problem or question, as the shapes maintain an abstract ambiguity. This painting in particular engages me because of the inclusion of complex geometric and simple geometric forms. Acting more as symbols than pictures, the multi-faceted diagrams allow the background to move through them, suggesting they are composed of thought and air rather than concrete construction. The thin fibers that move through the background, assuming from the paper substrate, also call to mind biomolecular reproduction and propagation/proliferation. But ultimately the piece functions on a purely formal level, with its appealing contrasts and analogous hues. The subtle shifts in space because of overlapping line prevent the piece from appearing pictorially diagrammatic. I do wonder if you’ve continued to work in this direction or in the more graphic monochromatic designs posted within the same time period. Both are visually arresting bodies of work.
