The saturation of red, green and turquoise hues makes this a succulently decadent display!  The decorative swirl marks swim and reel around the picture plane, with an almost pulsating intensity.  I appreciated your comments about your process, but while there may be a richer actual surface of scumbled texture, I like the piece for the ornamental flatness of space and denial of any anticipated perspective. The small seed pods/flower buds reach and twist upward, with snakelike movement, while the insects add staccato punctuation to the regular whirls and linear pattern. I also feel the square shape of the overall picture plane establishes a nice balance and tension of space, by again denying a traditional Renaissance window. There’s nothing restful or natural about this flower study- and perhaps that’s the very reason I find so unexpected and appealing.
