Curator’s Comments:

Winter Bayou offers a wonderful wide lead it to a hushed space.  It’s an intriguing natural environment, as the eye level is below the edge of the horizon; in the tall marsh grasses.  The reflective water is beautifully rendered, capturing the fleeting effects of light and shadow against the more meticulously executed land.  The line of houses off in the distance appears quaint, and is literally overshadowed – if not overtaken- by its surrounding wetlands.  The bright spot of reflective light in the center of the painting also nicely connects water and sky, as the pale blue pigment spills into adjacent areas. The vertical orientation of the composition accentuates the stratified layering of the scene, and creates a dynamic equilibrium.   I see the painting as serene and inviting, but also faintly mysterious, as we can’t see what’s beyond the dark bend directly ahead.
