Curator’s Comment:
Pinocchio on Sale manages an eerie, paranormal presence within a relatively ordinary backdrop. I find it interesting to note the piece’s origins are grounded in traditional photography, and then colored by hand as opposed to being created through digital manipulation. No doubt the original piece offers an unusual tactile surface and physical presence. The lone figure brings to mind a ghostly apparition in white, but the gauzy draped fabric revealing shocking blue skin underneath establishes the body in a corporeal, but unfamiliar state. The figure’s strange position on what looks to be a small trampoline in interior corner further anchors him to a conventional ground and to reality in general. I appreciate the black linear contour marks as dexterous connectors, which treat all of the forms as cohesive hand-worked elements. The fusion between color and texture also renders the dream-like scene surprisingly fluid and plausible.
