Curator’s Comment:

Give me myself is a powerfully rousing piece, not only for the dramatic contrast of light and shadow, but for the manipulation and contrast of personal psyche and cultural/spiritual identity.  The warm bronze coloration of the skin and mask interesting harmonize and connect visually within the picture plane, as the hand-held face is largely more expressive than the stylized head of the figure.  I like that both faces in flux present to the viewer with tightly shut eyes, but the graphic textile design of the figure’s skirt alternately displays open staring eyeballs, complete with black pupils and radiating irises.  The angularity of the gesture also contributes to the dynamic momentum.  The ‘s’ of the figure’s torso and leg echoes the bend of her arm, leaving small pockets of dark space in her twisting wake. Escape Long to Bleed is an equally provocative painting, containing similar narrative elements through dichotomy of dual portraits.  The blue pattern on the hunched figure is strangely iconic and tribal when presented in what seems to be a banal contemporary environment. The seated figure is meditative; possibly unaware of her presence.  I’m drawn to the elongated arm of the first figure, which seem distended in otherwise perfectly illustrated anatomy.  Again, the context is mysterious, as their closed eyes suggest day dreams, metaphysical transition, or inward contemplation. But whichever is intended, their lack of awareness allows the viewer voyeuristic entrance into their space.  I realize these were posted quite a while ago, and hope we see more of your recent work on the site.
