Curator’s Comments:
Rumor attracted my attention today, and held it for a considerable amount of time. The cropping of the figure allows the viewer voyeuristic entry into the scene, and an almost cinematic revelation of narrative action. The image feels as though it is part of a larger story. But while I may speculate on the nature of the space and background activity, it is easily to get lost in the vaguely floral motif and embellishments on the garment in the foreground. The costume style points to an 18 c. period piece. The faint tinting of the decorative elements brings some vibrancy to the otherwise still pose of the subject. I also appreciate the more painterly treatment of the central figure’s neck and hands, which runs counter to the flat blocks of grey throughout the painting. I wonder if it’s the low key palette that evokes a nefarious tinge to the title. The elimination of the figure’s eyes and ears mask her identity, with only her reddened lips accomplice to the rumor.
