Curator’s Comments:
Look at Me is an ironically funny painting. The title and simple figure drawings are light and jocular in mood, while the underlying painterly work exhibits a more complex and nimble dexterity. Rather than straightforward portraiture, the various faces appear to be a composite of many. Lacking a pictorial grounding or spatial orientation, the figures are questionability in different places or times. There’s also a slight hint of blind contouring or free association in the marks of the interior spaces. The unpretentious boats along the bottom of the piece intimate the ease of travel, or drift between the subjects. I also enjoy the adjacent square work, Lade in Blue. Arguably more abstract in design, the piece enjoys a visual hierarchy of shape and form. The figurative elements are less dominantly apparent here, but offer another layer of information beyond the fluid gestures. While it could also be observed that this piece is more about color than the previous image, for me the lines and natural scrawled gestures are the crucial strengths of its humanistic language.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
