Curator’s Comments:
I think I may have overlooked the obvious in this piece, by failing to realize what I was seeing. Most of the power of the work, for me, is the inherent fragility of the actual tree leaves, which look to be supports for transferred imagery. While I can’t clearly make out the text, the idea that the words of man are destined to be recorded and perhaps forgotten is a poetic one. There are also connotations that something is written within nature from within, but the stark contrast and artificiality of the colored images on the leaves makes that interpretation less likely. I like that there are two manipulated/printed objects within the picture frame. As a pairing they create the fundamentals of dialogue, whereas a grouping would put less visual emphasis on the exchange. Whatever the intention, this mysteriously untitled (Work 5-a) calls to mind impermanence, cyclical knowledge, and preciousness of art.
