I am deeply inspired by the Western sky, especially in Badlands National Park, SD. This is a second version inspired by our trip out west. We were traveling through the Badlands on a rather isolated road when a storm rapidly approached giving us pause. This version suggests a break in the clouds to disarm fear. The purple and yellow complementary contrast as well as strong value contrast adds to the drama of this large format painting.

Curator’s Comments:
The painting Be Not Afraid, Bad Lands, SD appeared randomly on the site today, and I appreciated your description of its wonderful place of inspiration. The complementary color scheme and value contrast certainly enhances the dramatic effect of the stormy sky. The linear perspective draws the viewer into the space, and emphasizes the pictorial break along the dark horizon. However, the light source on the ground appears to reflect uninterrupted daylight, as its bathed in warm natural tones and local color. For me, this vivid visual shift imparts a slightly surreal feeling to the scene, as if the landscape is yet untouched by the ominous clouds rolling in. I will concede that the break in the violet sky imparts a sense of reprieve, and contemplation of the forces of nature. While no dimensions are given, you have noted that the piece is in a large format. I’m sure the physicality of the space contributes to the impact of this awe-inspiring landscape. I see now that this work was posted on the same day you added your other paintings. I do hope you continue to add new pieces for us to enjoy.
