Curator’s Comments:

I always enjoy viewing your new work on the site.  This new piece, Young Girl, appears to be a cleaner, more graphic figural abstraction, while enjoying strong ties to your other portraits. The flat red background, while evidenced in Nude Study, and Face, reinforces the smooth lines and shadows of Young Girl rather than sets up an aesthetic choice to provide a visual rest from more active texture.  I find the elongated hair and breast to be rather obvious signifiers of gender within an otherwise androgynous subject. The color palette also belies any presence of femininity. As with your other paintings, the expression of this subject is ambiguous and enigmatic, holding the viewers’ attention with the ever so slight rejection of admiration or traditionally represented beauty.
