A Childish View of Evil – A Working Artist’s Statement

Generally people seems to believe that evil has a unique face which is to say that people believe that evil people are either ugly, deformed or dress a certain way. In my opinion, people seem to believe that evil people are like the creatures of mythology or fairy tales – that they may have tell-tale signs that they are evil. However, many of the world’s horrific killers seem to get away with their crimes due to their ability to blend in with their society as either the beautiful couple or the smooth talking womanizer. In my series, “A Childish View of Evil”, I will use pen and pastels to create drawing of demons based on real serial killers.

With the “Childish View of Evil” project, I originally believed I would use pen and ink or pastel to create the demons. However that all changed when I was making another sketch last night and realized I want a challenge with this project. So I decided that I would make sculptures out of paper, gesso, and other recycle materials. I have made a series of pieces out of recycle materials for a college project. I was satisfied with the process but I grew tired of the subject matter. I believe that the paper sculptures would do well with this project.
