artist statement

[Leah Koontz]

Hello! My name is Leah Koontz. I was born in Boulder Colorado. Currently I am a BFA candidate at Moore College of Art and Design and I am a 3D Fine Arts major. I enjoy drinking coffee and spending time with my family and participating in art related things, and learning. I have focused on sculpture because I enjoy the freedom that it grants me. I feel that it is empowering to find everyday objects that I consider to be aesthetically interesting and make them into something bigger. I am currently experimenting with many different types of media in order to find the best way to access my ideas through art. As long as I am creating something and pushing myself to continue learning, I am happy. I believe that it is my job to push my audience, as well. I want people to think about things in a variety of ways so that they can expand their horizons and start new conversations. I do not think that art is supposed to be beautiful in a traditional sense anymore, but it should be beautiful in an unexpected way. I believe that it is my job as an artist to help the general public access and appreciate artwork, as I feel certain that everyone is capable of art appreciation.
