Saving photos for the web using GIF format and Mac os 10.5

I recently upgraded my older Mac to 10.5.6 - I had some things go crazy for a while but then I got them all to conform to the new sheriff. Then I tried to add some content using Dreamweaver 8 and I am noticing the photos that I now save using GIF get all pixilated. My work-around has been to save the photos using JPG, instead. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem. It seems like I could change some setting somewhere and all would be right with the world.

Tracy - Thanks for the input. I think I will stick to JPEG. They have all I need for my website pictures. The only thing about this whole deal, is that I have used the GIF format because I thought I was supposed to and for years it worked just fine. This pixelation flub is something that has happened in the past 2 months. I guess it just bothers my sense of "Now What?"

Thanks - they might be too big. I start with a 300dpi photoshop image that is usually 19 inches on the long side. I will try looking at that angle. Thanks again.
