Drawn while a musician friend of the artist composed new songs. You can see the aforementioned friend playing keys on the left side above, with a cat asleep in front of his keyboard, on the right is some sort of elephant/octopus/snail hybrid. 18 inches x 24 inches, markers, pen, and watercolor penciles.

Curator’s Comments:

I appreciated your descriptive narrative accompanying the mixed media piece entitled It’s an Elephant. Coming across the piece today under randomly generated entries, I enjoyed the figural abstraction, and sensation of floating elements. The musical discourse makes sense with the arrangement, and fluid interactions of colors and shape boundaries.  The white outlines delineating some of the objects helps to create compositional hierarchy, and organization, without resorting to a traditional figure-ground relationship. Looking back through your other pieces, I remember admiring and commenting on Bird Bath soon after you joined the site.  While that piece employed a more consistent, allover value pattern, It’s an Elephant resonates for me because it emerges from one. I do hope you consider adding more recent works to the site.  It would be interesting to see the evolution of your thinking and designs.
